Junior Referees

Green Shirt Program

The Sunbury Basketball Association aims to support and retain learner officials through various tools and support mechanisms of the Green Shirt Program.

We provide a brightly coloured shirt for new officials to wear, identifying them as a beginner. Additionally, we offer posters and cards to remind players, coaches, and spectators not to get too upset if officials make mistakes.

As a participating association, we have access to a range of tools to help us administer, implement, and evaluate the program. We encourage our association to identify mentors for beginning officials to provide a friendly ear and constructive feedback as they learn.

Senior Referee Pathways

To become a qualified referee for domestic competition, you must complete the Orientation Level course and be assessed by your Referee Advisor to achieve a Level 1C grading.

Within six to twelve months, you may be upgraded to Level 1B. To reach Level 1A, you must complete a six-week course with your Referee Advisor.

Once you reach Level 1A, you may be nominated to referee on the Victorian Junior Panel, receive regular evaluations, and gain experience.

After a year on the Junior Panel, referees may undertake the Level 2 course and possibly referee for the Big V.
