Mick's Bio
Michael “Mick” Betson has been a driving force behind Sunbury Basketball across decades of dedicated service, contributing at every level of the Association.

In the formative years of the SBA, Mick was instrumental in securing financial guarantors from the local community, enabling the Association to obtain a bank loan to build Clarke Oval Stadium — a pivotal moment in Sunbury Basketball’s history.

Mick served as SBA President from 1979 to 1986 and as Vice President in 1977, 1978, 1987 and 1989. His leadership extended well beyond the executive, with involvement as a coach, referee, tribunal member and domestic player. As one of the Association’s first referees, Mick also established and led the referee’s program for many years, laying strong foundations for officiating development.

A founding member of Tigers Basketball Club — named in honour of his beloved Richmond Tigers — Mick served as Club President for more than a decade until the club folded in the late 1980s.

During the mid-1970s, Mick played a key role in securing Sunbury’s admission into Country Victoria representative competitions, then the only pathway for representative basketball. He contributed as a senior representative player, referee and coach, guiding both junior and senior Sunbury teams in championship competition.

Mick coached numerous Sunbury Jets VJBL teams and served as Head Coach of the Sunbury Jets Senior Women’s program from 1985 to 1992, leading the team in 160 games.

From 2008 to 2012, Mick served on the Committee that liaised with Hume City Council in the planning and construction of Courts 1 and 6 at Boardman Stadium, further strengthening the Association’s facilities for future generations to enjoy.

Following the folding of Tigers, Mick became heavily involved with Superoos Basketball Club, serving as a player, coach, committee member, junior delegate to the SBA, and Junior Boys Co-
ordinator overseeing more than 30 teams. His outstanding service was recognised with the Bert Bekker Shield for Best Club Person in 2007/08 and Life Membership of Superoos in 2016.

In 2017, Mick was awarded the SBA “Ron Elliott Memorial Award” for Best Club Person.

Mick’s influence spans leadership, development, facilities, representative pathways and club culture. His enduring legacy is reflected in the SBA “Most Promising Junior Boy Player Award” proudly named in his honour.
